Course Description

The GCSE Spanish course builds upon the linguistic structures and vocabulary that has been introduced in Spanish in Years 8 and 9. Students will continue to improve and refine their linguistic accuracy and fluency through the exploration of a range of relevant and engaging topics.

Assessment Structure

This course is assessed through 4 terminal examinations, one in each modality of language (listening, speaking, reading and writing). Each exam contributes 25% of the   overall grade. Students will be entered for either Foundation or Higher tier, with all 4 papers being taken at the same level.

The course content is divided into three themes as outlined below:

Theme 1: Identity and Culture

Family relationships, friendships, food and eating out, social media, technology, free time and hobbies.

Theme 2: Local, national, international and global interests

Holidays, weather, home town and local area and the environment.

Theme 3: Current and future study and employment

Work experience, part-time jobs, future careers and school life.

Special Features

During the GCSE course there may be opportunities for students to visit Spain to practise their speaking and listening skills in an authentic context. Students will also be  exposed to a range of authentic Spanish resources throughout their studies including songs, films and TV shows.

Why study Spanish?

Language qualifications are highly sought after by employers and a valuable addition to any application to Higher Education courses and universities. The ability to communicate in another language demonstrates a range of transferable skills which can be applied to a career in any sector.
